SECURITY IN THE CLOUD

Security in General

Security breaches are well known to incredibly damage a company's reputation, user's trust and investor's confidence, especially in the IT sector. That is why you can't afford to let the bad guys win when it comes to security.
We are going to look at the essentials of properly planning, implementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining a standard security posture in the cloud.

Before we delve right into cloud security, it is important to understand the areas that need to be fortified in IT defences and how exactly to do it. Some of these areas include:
  • Installing and configuring network components.
  • implementing secure protocols
  • secure network architecture
  • segmentation,
  • isolation,
  • virtualization,
  • troubleshooting
  • implementing secure systems design,
  • secure application development and deployment and
  • physical security controls
  • Information security (protecting against unauthorized access, disclosure, modification and destruction (etc) of physical and digital data)
  • Cybersecurity (defending organizations network, computers and data from unauthorized access, attach or damage)
  • Network Security (protecting data sent through network devices from viruses, malware, zero-day attacks, DDos, Hackers etc.)
  • Digital Forensics and incident response ( investigating, containing and recovering from incidents )

Security in cloud specific

In the cloud-specific context, Security is broadly approached in three unique sub-categories namely: Access, Data and Platform.

Access

This refers to who is allowed to what within the cloud platform.

Data

This represents what data gets stored and where it is located. Also, the data stored are either in transit or at the rest.

Platform

Here, we are referring to the physical systems that house and deliver information and all the computing power in the cloud.
The platform in its true definition is everything from the user's fingertips, every bit on the disk, the network in between, the server which runs the application and everything in-between
